Inspired by the poppies growing in Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny, The Garden Remembers explores the relationship between the fleeting beauty of nature and patterns that endure through time. Beneath the expressive flowers and vibrant layers of colour is a geometric structure derived from a pattern carved into stone on a Roman standard discovered at Corbridge in Northumberland.

Ancient geometry and contemporary garden imagery become intertwined, connecting two places separated by centuries and geography. The underlying pattern emerges and disappears through the painted surface, reflecting Helen Alice Johnson’s fascination with sacred geometry, the hidden structures found within nature and the sense of something deeper existing beyond what we immediately see.
