This painting is inspired by my latest garden series, where I visit a garden and make a response to it in my sketch book, before bringing those sketches, along with photographs, back to my studio to work on the final piece on canvas. It creates a final painting that is as much about memory, atmosphere and feeling as it is about observation. I also use a patterend underpainting on the canvas before beginning the painting. Sometimes this is obviously part of the finished piece and sometimes, as with this piece the underpainting is far more subtle.
