This painting is inspired by the explosion of primroses in the garden outside my studio in Northern France. The colours change with the light and despite the uncultured nature of the garden, the strength of the Primrose to burst through all the chaos never fails to impress me. I used the pentagon and five pointed star as the background patterned underpainting as the Primrose has five petals and the five pointed star is deeply spiritual, echoing the spirituality present in this garden. Fluorescent underpainting emphasises the almost luminous quality of the primroses against the soft light of this part of Northern France.
