Inspired by a Yorkshire Garden

This painting is inspired by my latest garden series, where I visit a garden and make a response to it in my sketch book, before bringing those sketches, along with photographs, back to my studio to work on the final piece on canvas. It creates a final painting that is as much about memory, atmosphere and feeling as it is about observation. I also use a patterned underpainting on the canvas before beginning the painting. Sometimes this is obviously part of the finished piece and sometimes, as with this piece the underpainting is far more subtle.

A vibrant tapestry of colour and gesture, this painting evokes the feeling of a garden experienced through memory rather than observation. Layers of turquoise, emerald, soft white and flashes of magenta and gold weave together in a dynamic landscape where flowers, foliage and light dissolve into one another. Vertical forms rise and sway across the anvas, creating a sense of growth, movement and quiet vitality. Balancing abstraction with hints of a flourishing garden, the work invites viewers into a space that feels both intimate and expansive.
